krangvollen Sopran vortrug.“

B. Flier in Badische Zeitung
Mendelssohn Bartholdy, op. 52

Ch. Adam in Badische Zeitung
Verdi, Requiem

„... T. M. Nishiokas Sopran souverän im langen Schluss-Solo. Beide Stimmen (Sopran und Alt) ergänzten sich
sehr klangschönen Duetten.“

G. Schreier in Badische Zeitung
Pergolesi, Stabat Mater

Menge anzufangen, zeigte immer wieder neu, welche Kraft in ihrer Stimme steckt.“

Freiburg-Schwarzwald.de
Italienischer Opernabend

„T. M. Nishioka zeigte beachtliches dramatisches Potential.“

Saarbrücker Zeitung
Martin, In terra pax

„Von besonders schöner Klangfärbung und blendend sauber die Sopranistin T. Nishioka.“

Pforzheimer Zeitung
Mozart, Große c-moll Messe

„T. M. Nishioka verfügt über einen Sopran, dem die Höhe zu Gebote steht, für den aber auch einzelne Ausflüge
in tiefe Gefilde keine Schwierigkeiten bedeuten.

J. Adam in Badische Zeitung
Mozart, Die Zauberflöte

D. Beer in Mitteldeutsche Zeitung

BIOGRAPHY

Tomoko 2023.jpg

Tomoko Maria Nishioka transitioned from a lyric soprano to a youthful dramatic soprano and initially obtained her diploma in solo singing at the Elisabeth University of Music in her hometown of Hiroshima. She continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Saarbrücken, earning a concert diploma in opera and concert singing under the guidance of Prof. Ellen Bosenius and Prof. Raymund Gilvan. She was awarded a scholarship by the Bayreuth Festival and received further support as an emerging artist from the Richard Wagner Association in Saarbrücken. Even during her studies, she was in high demand as both an opera and concert singer, leading to numerous engagements as a soloist in opera productions, orchestral and church concerts, festivals, and song recitals across nearly every major city in Germany and various European countries (including Teatro Liceu Barcelona), as well as in Australia, Argentina (Teatro Colón), and her home country, Japan. There, she collaborated with renowned conductors, directors, orchestras, choirs, and pianists, showcasing her artistry in numerous performances. Her extensive artistic work is documented through television recordings and live broadcasts (SWR, ARD, ZDF) as well as radio recordings (SR, MDR, SWR), including performances of Ein Deutsches Requiem (J. Brahms), Seven Early Songs (A. Berg), Requiem (W. A. Mozart), and various CD recordings such as Ave Maria - Marienlieder, Requiem (Mozart, Verdi, and Dvořák), Stabat Mater (Rossini and Haydn), and Gloria (Poulenc). Following her operatic debut as Pamina in The Magic Flute, she performed roles such as the Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro), Micaëla (Carmen), Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Leonora (Il Trovatore), and Maria (West Side Story) in both permanent and guest engagements at various opera houses and festivals. After her engagements at multiple opera houses, Tomoko Maria Nishioka shifted her primary focus to concert performances. She also enjoys performing themed song recitals, such as Eight Women, Eight Arias (Semi-Staged), Prayers (Sacred and Secular Songs), and Soirée à la Clara Schumann (a musical homage to Clara Schumann’s salon concerts). Additionally, she has a passion for operetta and musical theater, performing well-known arias in concert settings. As a personal "lifework," she regularly sings at church services in cathedrals and churches worldwide. A significant milestone was her solo performance in 2011 at the papal mass with Pope Benedict XVI in Freiburg, Germany, before an audience of 100,000, with a live global television broadcast. She has received valuable artistic inspiration through collaborations with Juan Pons, Sigmund Nimsgern, Tatjana Menotti, and Ks. Anneliese Rothenberger, as well as vocal guidance from Prof. Elisabeth Glauser, Prof. Raymund Gilvan, and Prof. Luciano Bertagnolio (Belcanto school). Her extensive repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary music, and she continues to take on major soprano roles, currently preparing for performances as Elsa (Lohengrin), Sieglinde (Götterdämmerung), the soprano part in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder. She is also dedicated to new artistic projects that explore the deeper meaning of human life. In the 2025/26 season, she plans to present Fear Not, Mary (Songs and Reflections) and Hiroshima – Voice of the Heart or Prayers of a Mother (A Song and Reflection Evening). As a certified vocal coach, Tomoko Maria Nishioka has been a full-time vocal instructor at the Freiburg Cathedral Singing School since 2000. Beyond her stage presence, she is committed to cultural exchange between Germany and Japan. In recognition of her efforts, she was appointed a friendship ambassador of her hometown Kure (Hiroshima Prefecture) in 2001 and of the city of Taketa (Oita Prefecture) in 2007.
